How to Swap LTC to BTC

Updated: October 2026

Litecoin was built from Bitcoin’s code, so the two coins look alike — but they run on separate blockchains. To turn LTC into BTC, you can’t simply send it to a Bitcoin address: you need a swap in a wallet or a trade on the LTC/BTC market of an exchange. This guide covers both, plus the address mix-up that catches many Litecoin users.

Quick answer: open a wallet that holds both Litecoin and Bitcoin, tap Swap, pick LTC → BTC, check the quote and confirm. Or deposit LTC to an exchange, sell it on the LTC/BTC market and withdraw BTC.

Can You Send LTC to a Bitcoin Address?

No. LTC sent to a Bitcoin address doesn’t become BTC — the two blockchains don’t see each other’s coins. Be especially careful with addresses that start with 3:

  • Litecoin’s SegWit addresses used to start with “3”, the same as Bitcoin’s SegWit addresses. As a result, users could send Litecoin into Bitcoin addresses and vice versa (Edge).
  • To fix this, Litecoin SegWit addresses now start with M; legacy Litecoin addresses start with L, and native SegWit addresses with ltc1 (Edge, StealthEX).

If your Litecoin wallet still shows an old “3…” address, don’t share it for BTC payments, and always check which coin an address belongs to before sending.

Swapping LTC for BTC Inside a Wallet

A swap sends LTC from your Litecoin address and delivers native BTC to your Bitcoin address in the same app — no exchange account needed.

  1. Check both addresses — a Litecoin address (L…, M… or ltc1…) and a Bitcoin address (1…, 3… or bc1…).
  2. Open Swap and choose LTC as the coin you pay with and BTC as the coin you receive.
  3. Enter the amount, leaving a little LTC for the network fee.
  4. Review the quote: the BTC you’ll actually get after fees, and the estimated time.
  5. Confirm and wait for BTC to arrive after the Bitcoin transaction is confirmed.

Walletverse

Walletverse - best crypto wallet

Walletverse is a self-custody wallet for iOS and Android that supports Litecoin, Bitcoin and 700+ other cryptocurrencies and tokens. Its built-in aggregator connects 100+ DEX and CEX venues with more than 10,000 trading pairs. Open LTC, tap Swap, select BTC and check the routes, rate and fees the app shows before you confirm.

Your private keys stay encrypted on your device behind a passcode and biometrics, and built-in AML checks (powered by Crystal) show an address’s risk level before you send.

Trading the LTC/BTC Pair on an Exchange

Kraken and Binance both list an LTC/BTC market (Kraken, Binance), and Binance also offers a one-step Convert (Binance Convert).

  1. Deposit LTC to your exchange account.
  2. Use Convert, or place a market or limit order on LTC/BTC.
  3. Withdraw BTC to your own Bitcoin wallet — or keep it on the exchange.

Going Back: BTC to LTC

The reverse works the same way — BTC → LTC in your wallet, or buy LTC on the LTC/BTC market. Make sure you receive Litecoin to an address that starts with L, M or ltc1. Step-by-step guide: how to swap BTC to LTC.

Costs, Confirmation Times and Minimums

WhatWhat to expect
Litecoin networkA new block about every 2.5 minutes
Bitcoin networkA new block about every 10 minutes; BTC payments can’t be reversed (bitcoin.org)
Swap or trading feeSet by the swap provider or exchange — compare the final BTC amount
Minimum amountExchanges and swap providers set minimums; Binance shows them in Convert

The LTC/BTC rate changes constantly, so check the live quote right before you swap.

Cashing Out Litecoin Instead

If what you actually want is dollars, not bitcoin, you don’t need BTC at all: sell LTC for fiat on an exchange — Kraken, for example, has an LTC/USD market (Kraken) — and withdraw to your bank. You can also swap LTC to a stablecoin first: how to swap LTC to USDT. Walletverse doesn’t offer selling crypto for fiat yet.

LTC or BTC: Which Is Better?

Neither is better in every case. Litecoin confirms blocks faster (about every 2.5 minutes), which some people use for payments; Bitcoin has a smaller, fixed supply of 21 million and is far more widely traded. Choose based on what you need the coin for. Both are volatile, and this guide is not financial advice.

Tax Note

In the US, the IRS treats digital assets as property, and exchanging one digital asset for another can create a taxable gain or loss (IRS FAQ). Check the rules where you live.
