How to Swap ETH to USDT

There’s one catch that surprises many people: you still need ETH after the swap, because every USDT transfer on Ethereum is paid for in ETH. This guide shows how to convert ETH to USDT in a wallet, on a DEX or on an exchange, how to get USDT on other networks, and how to swap back.
Quick answer: open a wallet that supports Ethereum, choose Swap, select ETH → USDT, keep a little ETH for future fees, review the quote and confirm. USDT arrives at the same Ethereum address.

Why You Need ETH to Send USDT
On Ethereum, all gas fees must be paid in ETH (ethereum.org). Transferring an ERC-20 token such as USDT uses more gas than a simple ETH transfer — ethereum.org lists about 65,000 gas for an ERC-20 transfer. So:
- Don’t swap 100% of your ETH — keep enough to pay for sending your USDT later.

Choose the network the recipient or platform expects. Sending USDT on the wrong network can lead to lost funds.
Option 1: Swap ETH to USDT in a Wallet
- Open your wallet and select Ethereum (ETH).
- Choose Swap and select USDT — check that it’s on the network you want.
- Enter the amount, leaving some ETH for gas.

How Much Is 1 ETH in USDT?
Because USDT tracks the US dollar, the ETH/USDT rate is close to ETH’s dollar price — and it changes every second. Check the live quote in your wallet’s swap screen or on the exchange before you confirm, and compare the final USDT amount after fees rather than the headline rate.
How to Swap USDT Back to ETH
- Open USDT and choose Swap, then select ETH.
- Approve USDT the first time (a separate transaction paid in ETH).
- Review the quote and confirm.
You need a little ETH for gas in both steps. If you have none, use a swap option that includes the gas fee in the trade.
How to Convert ETH to Cash
